Title: VIETNAMESE STUDENTS’ PERSPECTIVES ON THE COCA CORPUS |
Authors: Nguyen Thi Dan Tam |
Abstract: This study investigates how Vietnamese students in an English course connected to a British
University in Ho Chi Minh City views the COCA (Corpus of Contemporary American English). It
examines survey data from 15 students and interviews with 5 participants using a mixed-methods
methodology. The results show that although students appreciate COCA for learning grammar and
vocabulary, issues include cultural misalignment, information overload, and complicated interfaces. It
may be surprising to learn that some students use COCA in unique ways outside of the classroom. The
study provides useful insights for incorporating corpus technologies into EFL training while
highlighting the necessity of localised adjustments and instructional support.
