Abstract: The Book of Hosea portrays the dangers of the observance of religious ceremony without genuine
devotion and commitment to the Lord, otherwise known as syncretism. This deviation took place in
the forms of intermarriages, a fusion of religion, the worship of foreign gods, and the appointment of
degenerate priests to serve in their shrines. All these too easily led to compromise, selfish ambition
and lack of integrity in one’s personal/social activities and dealings. Dishonesty and corruption became
endemic. Such was the situation in which Prophet Hosea ministered. Nevertheless, Hosea’s message
was more than solemn warnings. It contained a note of hope in that with sincere repentance and asking
God’s forgiveness, accompanied by renewed commitment to God, people may find forgiveness and
restoration to God’s favour and blessings. |
